Professional Seminar
29 July 2014, at 14.00-17.00, at the Turku School of Economics (address: Rehtorinpellonkatu 3). A dinner buffet will be served after the event.
Please note that pre-registration is required.
Identifying and Addressing social and ethical software development traps.
Most computing practitioners want to do the right thing. We use risk analysis techniques to identify cost, function, and schedule risks to systems development. Unfortunately, too frequently, during development our projects are derailed or after deployment they have significant negative impacts on society. This had been a puzzle given our knowledge about systems development and our desire to do a good job.
This workshop based on the latest research into these problems is designed to look at why the systems we develop fail to meet our own high standards and what to do about it. The workshop will look at common real world issues and ways to identify social and ethical traps that derail systems and practical ways to mitigate these frequently missed system development risks. Participants in this hands-on workshop will learn about and practice applying techniques to moderate these issues.
Don Gotterbarn, Software Engineering Ethics Research Institute; ACM Committee on Professional Ethics
Don Gotterbarn, working as an academic and software systems developer, has been active over several decades promoting responsible computing practices. As a consultant he worked on systems including ones for the U.S. Navy, the Saudi Arabian Navy, vote counting machines, and missile defence. Don is the Director of the Software Engineering Ethics Research Institute and a visiting professor at the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility in England. He has taught at institutions like the University of Southern California, at government agencies such as the NSA, and was a visiting scientist Carnegie Mellon’s Software Engineering Institute.
Don chairs the ACM Committee on Professional Ethics, and was instrumental in the development of IEEE/ACM Software Engineering Code of Ethics and Professional Practice. With support from the NSF, he and colleagues developed a CASE tool for discovering and anticipating the ethical impacts of a software development effort. His contribution to computing ethics is recognized by various professional bodies (e.g. ACM Outstanding Contribution award 2005; and Joseph Weizenbaum award 2010 from the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology).

Turku – the conference city
Turku, in the Southwest corner of Finland, is the oldest city and the first capital of the country. Today it is the capital of its region, the Southwest Finland. Turku is often said to be the only West European town in Finland as all medieval European towns have four things in common: a river for transport, a cathedral for religious power, a castle that represents the secular power and last but not least – a market place for acts of commerce. Turku has them all! Please visit the Turku tourist office Turku Touring website for more information, or see the film TURKU FINLAND URBAN LEGENDS SINCE 1229.
Travelling
Turku has an international airport and it is easy to reach by air via Helsinki, Stockholm, Riga or via Gdansk. If you fly to Helsinki, from Helsinki-Vantaa airport there is a shuttle bus to Turku (2.5 hours, departures every hour).
Please note: The Turku airport will be closed for runway renovations from 30 June to 26 July (opening again on 27 July). During renovations all flights to Turku will be directed to Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
From Stockholm you may choose to travel to Turku on a ferry through one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world. Daily connections between Stockholm and Turku are operated by Silja Line and Viking Line. The ferry takes about 10 hrs. For more information about Turku and travel connections, please visit the Turku Touring website.

Taxis are generally easy to get. There are several taxi stands in the city centre, one on the market square. For a taxi ride from Turku Airport to the city centre you may expect a fare between 25-35 euros. After 8 p.m. there is a small additional charge.
Weather in Turku
Please visit the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website for updated news on weather in Finland. You can also get a 5-day forecast of the local weather in Turku.
Languages
Turku is a bilingual city, official languages being Finnish and Swedish. In addition, you may expect that most people (particularly younger people) have at least basic knowledge of English.
Currency
The Finnish currency unit is the Euro. You can exchange foreign currency and traveller’s cheques in the Forex currency exchange company (address: Eerikinkatu 13, by the Market Place). Banks are open from 10.00 to 16.30 on weekdays and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. There are numerous cash machines (ATMs) open around the clock and accepting all major credit cards. Major credit cards, in particular Visa, Eurocard and Mastercard are widely accepted almost everywhere (in hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, cafeterias, bars, etc.).
Voltage
The electric current in Finland is 230V, 50Hz. Plugs are two-pin continental size.
Insurance
Please note that the conference participants are not covered by any insurance (travel, medical, accident or liability) taken by the Conference Organizers. The Conference Organizers cannot accept liability for any loss or damage suffered by any participant or accompanying person or other person during travel to and from the conference or during the conference. Participants are advised to consider purchasing their own travel insurance and to extend their personal policy to cover personal possessions.
